Mixed Ultimate Frisbee / Southwest England
Torque is a reboot of TQ9ers, a historic Mixed (co-ed) Ultimate Frisbee team in Totnes with a 20-year history. Torque hopes to expand Ultimate in our corner of the southwest by combining British spirit with some tech from across the pond. Our roster includes players from all over South Devon. We are beginner-friendly, and our goal is to grow a vibrant Ultimate community in Totnes, South Devon, and their surrounding areas.
Where We Train
We play Tuesdays evenings from 8-9:30pm, indoors, at the multi-purpose gymnasium on the King Edward VI Community College campus (KEVICC). We play indoor during standard time (not daylight savings, Nov-Mar). In the summer, we move outdoors to a grass pitch just opposite, from 6-8pm. It's not a long walk from the Totnes train station, and not far from quite a few local pubs in quirky downtown Totnes.

What's Next?
We are gearing up for 2026! The kit orders is being finalized. We have enough people rostered to field a full team for our next outdoor season of Mixed Ultimate. The 2026 tournament schedule is set. See below for details. It includes 1 or more Mixed Tour events, Regionals, and Glastonbury, as well as start-of- and end-of-season one-day tournaments ("friendlies") with our friends in Bristol and Exeter.
As we move into our first competitive season under the new banner of Torque, our goal is to, in each tournament as well the season as a whole MOVE UP in our national ranking. In other words, our goal is to break seed at each event we enter, and leave behind our current ranking of dead-last (this being our first season, thus no ranking).
To do this, we're going to be embracing Ultimate fundamentals. Nothing fancy, nothing innovative. Just building our understanding of the sport, and getting better at executing. At this stage, it's about reducing the number of unforced errors. It's easy to play without any structure or understanding of the game. Like most open-field sports, it's perfectly amenable to just randomly running around.
The good news is that with our full schedule, we'll have tons of opportunities to play, have fun, and iterate.
Is this "Ultimate Frisbee"?
Ultimate (formerly known as "Ultimate Frisbee") is an open-field sport, much like Association Football, Rugby, or American Football. There are 7 on a side. The field is depicted above. Games are to 15 points. Points begin with one team, standing in their endzone, "pulling" (i.e., throwing) the disc to the other team. Anyone who catches the disc cannot run with the disc (basketball travel rules), and must pass to someone else. Catching a disc in the opponent's endzone (on the opposite end of the pitch) scores a point. Ultimate is unique in that it's:
Yes, sadly, Ultimate is "Ultimate Frisbee". Except that "Frisbee" is a registered trademark of Wham-O Corporation, who made a big stink about protecting their trademark. This created a problem for our sport, so now it's just "Ultimate".
Or even more ridiculously, in some cases, it's known as the sport of "Flying Disc", and "Ultimate" is a discipline within it. Somehow they took a silly name and make it utterly absurd. Looking at you, World Games. Ultimate suffers from having a pretty silly name. At least we've dropped the trademarked bit.
"Nothing can beat a whole weekend of Ultimate Frisbee."
TBD, 14 Mar 2026
A multi-team friendly hosted by Exeter Club Ultimate on their riverside fields. A good chance to take stock before the tour season, and to give us a concrete reference for things to work on for the 2026 season.
Notthingham, 28 Mar 2026
The first of 3 Mixed Tour events, and one of two within reasonable driving distance. Our first chance to get our national ranking, and to move out of last place. It's up in Nottingham, so we need to decide if we want to attend.
Worcester, 11 Apr 2026
If you're over 32 and wanna play hard, let's talk about attending this event. Instead of chasing uni-aged kids around, we can chase around slightly less-young people. Obviously, since this isn't open to anyone b/c of eligibility requirements, we should discuss.
Reading, 13 Jun 2026
The last of 3 Mixed Tour events, and the easiest one to get to. If we only play one tour event this year, I think we should target this one. If it's the only, it's our chance to get a ranking above last place. If not, it's a good chance to test our learning.
Univ. of Southampton, 19 Jul 2026
The culmination of the outdoor season. The goal is to break seed at the tournament, and see how we're developing as a team in the ultimate test. This is the final and most important competitive event of the season. Save the date!
Glastonbury, 11-13 September 2026
Glastonbury is a wonderful Mixed tournament to cap off the summer outdoor season. We weren't able to put together a team last year, but we have 8 months to prepare. Come see how much fun Ultimate can be!
"My biggest regrets are the bids I never took."
